Picturing Nigeria is a photographic exploration of Nigerian cities. It began through a pilot project called Digitizing Ibadan, which was initiated by Olatokunbo Olaleye (pictured) as part of his requirements for a Masters' Degree in Communication and Culture at Ryerson University, Canada. The project was launched in the city of Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria in June 2006. Residents of Ibadan were invited to visually (re)present their perceptions of the city. |
Over a period of four weeks, hundreds of digital images were recorded and stored on this website, designed specifically for the project.
Picturing Nigeria was initiated to display everyday life and everyday sights of Nigeria, allowing for the interpretation of these ordinary acts (of recording and displaying images) as democratic and meaningful. The premise relies on the idea that images rendered online (as photoblogs) could be established to provide a unique and presently absent visual perspective. The website represents an endeavour by the everyday citizen to recontextualize photography as a social discourse. It is hoped that the collection will continue to evolve, thereby, in a sense, never actually reaching a state of total realization.
